This Looks Like a Job for… a Really Fast Wardrobe Change

superman-it-tickles50 Comic Covers That Catch Superman in Mid-Change from Mild-Mannered Reporter to Man of Steel

Hey, it’s Superman Month! Why? Why not?

To get things started, here are a few covers showing Superman striking that most iconic of Superman poses: Clark Kent ripping open his shirt to reveal the ‘S’ shield logo beneath. You see it all the time whenever he’s up on a screen:

It’s a great visual because it’s a powerful way to show his transition from mild-mannered reporter to superhuman butt-kicker, and it also speaks to the subconscious belief we all share about how the “real” person inside each of us is hiding underneath these itchy grown-up clothes we’re forced to wear every day.

But it does raise the question of how many of these shirts the guy goes through in an average week. Assuming he doesn’t undo all his buttons at super-speed during his change, those buttons are going to catch and pop off. And on a reporter’s salary, it can’t be easy replacing his shirts every time someone needs a quick rescue. Maybe he opts for Velcro. Maybe he has a sewing room up at the Fortress of Solitude where he does all his mending at super-speed. Or maybe he shops at the same places those Chippendales dancers pick up their easy-to-remove clothing. Maybe we should stop thinking about this.
