Show Me That Smile Again

29 Comic Covers Featuring or Inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa

The next time you’re feeling flush thanks to all those special-edition Death of Superman issues you slabbed 20 years ago, think about this: the Mona Lisa (or La Gioconda as Leonardo da Vinci might have put it) currently holds the record as the world’s most valuable painting, a distinction it’s not going to give up anytime soon.

An assessment of the Mona Lisa’s value in 1962 pegged the painting at US$100 million; taking inflation into account, that means it’s worth more than $810 million today.  (To put that in terms a comic fan can understand, that’s the same as having 270 copies of the highest-selling comic at auction, a copy of Action Comics #1 graded 9.0 by CGC).

Not that anyone will ever get the chance to bid on the lady; as property of the French government on permanent display at the Louvre, the painting isn’t going anywhere, and is quite literally priceless.

But take heart, lovers of art. You may not have the means to acquire the original for your private viewing pleasure, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy any one of the many copies, caricatures, homages and parodies produced by other artists over the centuries.
