It doesn’t happen too often in life, but when it does it sure leaves an impression (and not just the fish-shaped one on the victim’s face). 

It’s not hard to see how someone might be tempted to use a fish as a weapon. Most fish come in the perfect club shape for bonking, and are light enough to hurl and yet have enough heft to make an impact. They’re usually wet and unpleasant to have up in your business especially if they’ve been out of the water for a while, and (with sharks especially) they sometimes come with extra bonus injury potential because of the rough texture of their scales.

Then there’s the smell. Even if the target of your fish attack manages to escape, they have to deal with the indignity of spending their whole ride home smelling fishy. That can’t be fun.

Yep, no two ways about it: slapping someone with a fish rocks and I can’t think of anyone who might feel otherwise. Well, except maybe the fish. They might have a complaint or two about it.

I couldn’t tell you when the first fish slap took place in the comics, but I’d be willing to bet the all-time champs at it are the cast members of Astérix, a fun series set in an ancient Gaul village where a fish fight is always on the verge of breaking out.
